Do You Stand Aimlessly On The Practice Tee Bashing Golf Balls Until You Are A Sweaty, Worn Out Mess!
This is NOT practice…it’s a work out and nothing is getting accomplished by doing this, unless your goal is to get worn out and sweaty.
But, if you REALLY want to practice AND make your game better then here are a few tips and drills for you.
Always start out by hitting half wedge shots – it’s the heaviest club in the bag and it’s better for your timing and pace. I recommend hitting ALL wedges from what I can a 3/4 stroke and NEVER from a full stroke position. Wedges are for ACCURACY and NOT distance so learn how to control the distance and trajectory.
From the wedges move up to the 8 iron and make some full strokes. Change targets so that you don’t get locked into one and before EVERY shot go through your pre-shot. After a few of these now move up to the 4 iron and hits the same number of shots – again changing targets.
After the 4 iron go to the Driver and continue to pick different targets, go through your pre-shot and work on not only accuracy but trajectory as well.
The largest part of your practice sessions should be on the short game. By using our drills your short game will improve dramatically! First things first. Go to Home Depot and get a 2×4, these come in 8 foot lengths. Ask one of the friendly staff to cut it into (2) two and a half foot lengths leaving you a three foot piece.
For putting practice set up the three foot piece so that the four inch portion is vertical. Make sure you find a straight putt and align this piece to the hole. Now place the heel of your putter against the face of the 2×4 and make a stroke – back and through – keeping the heel of the putter against the face. You DO NOT want to manually open or close the putter face during the stroke even though it will appear open to the target line it is perfectly square to the “arc.”
Now make 100 three footers, move the board back to six feet and make 100 six footers, and finally move the board to fifteen feet and make 100 of those. That is, make 100 IN A ROW from each distance! If you miss one you start over at whatever distance you are on. Let’s say that you make all of the putts from three and six feet but during the 56th putt on the ten footer you miss. That means you start over again from zero on the ten footers.
The putter will go backward and upward but not inward. There is NO inward on a vertical plane. Do this drill and your putting WILL improve tremendously!
Next time we work on the chipping drill.
